Two Piece Divided FAQs

What exactly is a "two piece divided" tank and why would I need one?

It's a single tank manufactured in two sections — either joined on site to form one large vessel, or built with an internal divide creating two separate chambers within the same shell. They're commonly specified where a single-piece tank would be too large to transport or manoeuvre through a restricted access point, or where you need two distinct storage volumes (say, potable and non-potable, or two different processes) housed in one footprint.

Do both chambers have to be the same size?

No — divided tanks can be specified with equal or unequal chamber capacities depending on your requirement, for example a larger main store and a smaller reserve or overflow section. Let us know the split you need at enquiry stage as this affects the manufacturing spec and connection positions rather than being a simple after-purchase adjustment.

How are the two sections joined on installation?

Sections are typically bolted and sealed together on site using a purpose-made flange or lap joint with a suitable gasket or sealant, forming a watertight join once correctly torqued down. This should always be carried out by a competent installer following the manufacturer's fitting instructions, as an improperly made joint is the most common cause of leaks in this tank type.

Can one chamber hold potable water if the other doesn't?

Yes, but the chamber intended for wholesome water must be manufactured and fitted out to WRAS requirements independently of the non-potable side, with no cross-contamination risk between the two sections. Make this clear when ordering so the correct materials, liners and fittings are used on the potable chamber specifically.

Why choose a two piece design over a single-piece tank of the same total capacity?

The main driver is access — many rural and domestic sites have gateways, alleys or basement entrances that simply won't take a large one-piece tank, so splitting it in two makes delivery and positioning possible. It also allows GRP or polyethylene tanks to be built larger overall than transport and crane-lift limits would normally permit for a single moulded unit.

What should I check on site before delivery to make sure both sections can be positioned correctly?

Confirm that your access route, turning space and final excavation or plinth can accommodate two separate deliveries plus room to manoeuvre each section into its final joined position — this is often tighter than expected for below-ground installations. You'll also need a level, properly prepared base ready for both halves before the join is made, so have groundworks completed in advance of the delivery date.
