If you're storing oils, chemicals or other potentially polluting liquids, the Environment Agency's Pollution Prevention Guidelines (and in some cases building regs) require secondary containment capable of holding at least 110% of the largest container's volume. Our outdoor IBC storage units are supplied with integral bunding to meet this requirement, saving you from having to source a separate bund. It's always worth checking what's being stored, as some substances carry additional containment or fire-separation rules.

Yes — they're built specifically for that, with weatherproof roofing, corrosion-resistant finishes and UV-stable materials so they won't degrade in sun, rain or frost. Steel-framed units are typically galvanised or powder-coated, while GRP and polyethylene versions resist rust entirely. This means your IBCs, drums and their contents stay protected year-round without needing to be moved under cover.

Most units need a firm, level, load-bearing surface such as concrete or well-compacted hardstanding to support the weight of full IBCs and to keep the bund functioning correctly. Some smaller or skid-mounted units can sit on suitably prepared ground, but this depends on the model and total loaded weight. We can advise on base requirements for your chosen unit before delivery.

The units themselves are designed to safely contain a wide range of liquids, but chemical compatibility depends on the IBC or drum material and its seals, not just the storage unit. Check the substance's data sheet against the container manufacturer's compatibility chart before filling. Where flammable or particularly hazardous substances are involved, additional fire-separation distances or ventilation may also apply.

Most units feature wide double doors or removable panels for easy forklift or pallet-truck loading, along with lockable doors to control access and reduce theft or tampering risk. Some configurations also include shelving or drum racking to keep smaller containers organised and off the bund floor for easier inspection. Units are usually delivered flat-packed or part-assembled on a pallet or kerbside delivery, depending on size, with full assembly instructions included. Larger multi-bay stores may need offloading with a forklift or crane, so site access and unloading facilities should be confirmed ahead of delivery. Installation itself is generally straightforward for a competent tradesperson, though we're on hand to answer any queries during the build.
