Jonesco FAQs

What are Jonesco tanks made from and why choose GRP over plastic?

Jonesco tanks are manufactured from GRP (glass-reinforced plastic), which is significantly stronger and more rigid than moulded polyethylene, particularly in larger capacities. GRP holds its shape without bulging under load, resists UV degradation, and has a long service life both above and below ground. It's the standard choice for larger cold water storage and sectional tanks where polyethylene alone wouldn't offer sufficient structural strength.

What's the difference between a one-piece and a sectional Jonesco tank?

One-piece tanks are moulded as a single unit and suit smaller to mid-range capacities where access to the installation site isn't restricted. Sectional tanks are built from bolted GRP panels assembled on site, which makes them the only practical option for larger capacities or where a tank needs to fit through a narrow doorway, loft hatch or plant room access. Sectional builds can also be extended or reconfigured more easily if storage needs change later.

How do I work out what size Jonesco tank I need?

Sizing depends on use — cold water storage for a house is typically calculated on occupancy and demand, while fire suppression or agricultural tanks are sized against a required volume or flow duration. As a rule of thumb, allow for at least 24 hours' storage for domestic cold water backup, but always check against Building Regulations Part G or your specific application's design requirement. If you're unsure, give us your intended use and site constraints and we can help match capacity to tank.

Are Jonesco tanks suitable for storing drinking water?

Yes, Jonesco's potable water tanks are manufactured to WRAS standards and are approved for storing wholesome water for domestic and commercial use. Make sure you specify a potable-rated tank at the point of order, as non-potable versions of the same shell size aren't suitable for drinking water storage without the correct lining and fittings.

Do Jonesco tanks need insulation if installed outside or in a loft?

Cold water tanks installed outdoors or in unheated lofts should be insulated to prevent freezing in winter, and Jonesco offers tanks with factory-fitted insulated jackets or panels for this purpose. Insulation also helps limit condensation and temperature rise in warmer months, which matters for potable water quality. If your tank isn't pre-insulated, we can advise on a suitable retrofit jacket to match the tank profile.

What should I check before delivery of a large Jonesco tank?

Confirm access dimensions along the full delivery route, not just at the final position — gateways, turning circles and overhead obstructions all matter for larger one-piece tanks arriving on a flatbed or crane-assisted vehicle. Sectional tanks are more forgiving since panels are delivered flat and assembled on site, which is often the better option where access is genuinely tight. Make sure the base or plinth is fully prepared and level before the delivery date, as most hauliers won't wait around for groundworks to catch up.
