What size silage tank do I need?
Tank size depends on herd size, effluent run-off volumes and how often you're able to arrange emptying. As a rough guide, smaller holdings often manage with tanks in the 2,800–10,000 litre range, while larger dairy or beef operations typically need capacities well into the tens of thousands of litres. Are silage tanks suitable for below-ground installation?
Yes, our silage tanks are specifically designed as below-ground, shallow-dig units, making them easy to integrate into existing yard layouts without extensive excavation. The GRP construction with specialist liner is built to withstand ground pressure and the corrosive nature of silage effluent and slurry. Correct backfill and a suitable base are still essential to ensure long-term structural stability.
Why are silage tanks made from GRP rather than plastic?
Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) offers excellent chemical resistance, which is important given the acidic and corrosive nature of silage liquor and animal waste. It's also rigid, durable and well suited to underground installation where it needs to resist ground loading over many years. The special liner adds a further layer of protection against the effects of effluent.
What regulations apply to silage effluent storage?
Silage effluent is highly polluting and its storage is covered under the Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil (SSAFO) Regulations, which set requirements for tank construction, capacity and location relative to watercourses. You'll need to size your tank to hold effluent for the required storage period, taking account of rainfall and your farm's waste management plan. It's worth checking current SSAFO guidance or speaking with your local authority or the Environment Agency before installation.
How do I empty and maintain a silage tank?
Silage tanks are designed to be pumped out periodically once effluent reaches capacity, using a suitable silage pump such as those we supply alongside our tanks. Regular emptying prevents overflow and keeps the tank working within its intended capacity. It's good practice to inspect access covers, seals and connections periodically to check for wear or damage.
What should I check before ordering a silage tank?
Confirm the required capacity based on herd numbers, effluent generation and your planned emptying schedule, and check ground conditions and access for delivery and installation.
