As a general guide, air filters should be checked every few months and replaced annually, or sooner if you notice reduced airflow or a build-up of dust and debris. Diffuser membranes typically last two to three years, though this varies with usage and how well the system is maintained. Keeping spares on hand means you're not left waiting when a part does fail.

A failing membrane often shows as reduced bubbling in the aeration chamber, a change in effluent quality, or an increase in odour from the tank. You may also notice the blower running harder or louder as it struggles against a blocked or perished membrane. Left unchecked, poor oxygen circulation can allow the biological process to stall, so it's worth inspecting the tank if you spot any of these signs.

Straightforward items like air filters, alarm units and lids can usually be fitted or replaced by a competent homeowner or groundworker without specialist tools. However, work involving the diffuser membrane, blower or any electrical connections should be carried out by a qualified engineer, both for safety and to avoid invalidating any warranty. If you're not confident, it's worth arranging a routine service visit to handle these jobs alongside your annual maintenance check.

An alarm isn't always a legal requirement, but it's strongly recommended as it gives early warning of blower failure, high water levels or other faults before they turn into a costly problem or environmental issue. Most alarms are simple audible and visual units that fit to the control panel and are straightforward to retrofit to existing systems. Given the relatively low cost against the risk of an undetected failure, it's one of the most worthwhile upgrades you can make.

Riser extensions are used where the tank has been installed deeper than standard, bringing access up to ground level for servicing and desludging. Replacement lids are commonly needed if the original has become brittle, cracked or damaged with age, or if you need a trafficable or lockable lid for added safety. Getting the right height and diameter extension matters, so measure your existing setup or check your installation drawings before ordering.
