Plastic Storage Cabinets FAQs

What are plastic storage cabinets typically used for?

They're most commonly used to store chemicals, water treatment additives, oils and other COSHH-regulated substances safely and securely, both indoors and outdoors. Many trade and site customers also use them for general equipment, tools or PPE storage where a weatherproof, corrosion-resistant enclosure is needed. Unlike metal cabinets, they won't rust and are inert to most acids and chemicals.

Are these cabinets suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, the polyethylene used in these cabinets is UV-stabilised and designed to withstand UK weather without becoming brittle or discolouring badly over time. Most feature a sloped or weatherproof roof to shed rainwater and gasket-sealed doors to keep contents dry. If you're storing chemicals outdoors long-term, check the specific cabinet's UV rating and door seal quality before ordering.

Do I need a bunded cabinet for chemical storage?

If you're storing liquids that could leak or spill — chemicals, oils, water treatment additives — a bunded cabinet is strongly recommended and is often a legal requirement under COSHH and environmental regulations. The integral sump should hold at least 110% of the largest container stored, or 25% of total capacity if multiple containers are kept. Check the bund capacity stated for each cabinet against what you actually plan to store.

How do I choose the right size cabinet?

Start with what you need to store — number and size of containers, drums or cans — and allow extra space for safe handling and shelf access rather than filling to capacity. Consider door swing clearance and whether the cabinet needs to fit through a specific doorway or gate if it's going indoors. For outdoor installations, also check the footprint against any base or hardstanding you're planning to use.

Are the cabinets lockable and secure?

Most plastic storage cabinets in this range come with lockable doors as standard, using either a key lock or hasp fitting for a padlock of your choice. This is particularly important for COSHH compliance and for keeping hazardous substances away from children, pets or unauthorised site personnel. If security is a priority, look for cabinets with reinforced door edges or multi-point locking.

What kind of delivery and assembly should I expect?

Cabinets are typically delivered fully assembled or with minimal self-assembly required, such as fitting shelves or the roof section, and most arrive on a pallet given their size and weight. As with our tanks, you'll need a suitable access point and someone available to help manoeuvre the cabinet into its final position, since kerbside delivery drivers won't carry it in for you. Lead times vary by cabinet size and stock availability, so check the product page for current estimates.
