How do I work out what size firefighting water tank I need?
Tank capacity is normally dictated by your fire risk assessment, insurer requirements, or local fire authority guidance rather than guesswork, and can range from a few thousand litres for a small sprinkler feed up to several hundred thousand litres for industrial sites. Factors include building size, occupancy risk, hydrant spacing and whether the tank is a sole water source or a backup supply. We'd always recommend confirming the required volume with your fire engineer or building control before ordering.
Should I choose a steel or GRP firefighting water tank?
Steel tanks (often bolted panel construction) suit larger capacities and sites needing a robust, long-life structure that can be built up in stages on site. GRP tanks are lighter, corrosion-proof and well suited to smaller or medium capacities where fast installation and low maintenance are priorities. Both materials are engineered to cope with constant water storage and the pressure demands of a firefighting draw-off.
Do firefighting water tanks need to be connected to the mains?
No — many firefighting tanks are designed as standalone static water supplies, filled by mains, borehole or even tanker, which is exactly what makes them useful on remote or rural sites without reliable infrastructure. Some installations do include a mains top-up or bypass so the tank refills automatically after use. The key requirement is that the tank refills reliably and quickly, whichever source you use.
Can a firefighting water tank be installed underground?
Yes, both GRP and steel tanks are available in underground versions, which is common where surface space is limited or a discreet installation is required. Underground tanks need to be structurally rated for ground and any traffic loading, and access covers must allow fire crews to locate and draw water from them quickly. Below-ground installation also protects stored water from freezing in exposed locations.
What fittings or connections come with a firefighting water tank?
Most tanks are supplied with outlet connections suited to fire brigade hydrant couplings or hard-suction hose, along with inlet fittings for filling and an overflow. Depending on the application you may also need a low-level alarm, sight gauge, or a pump connection chamber for sprinkler or hydrant systems.
