A water tank is a great way to store and manage your water supply, but efficient control requires the right tools. We understand the importance of having reliable taps and valves for your water tank and offer a comprehensive range of options to help you regulate water flow with precision and ease.
Our Aylesbury/Keraflo valves are renowned for their brass construction and smooth operation. These valves are ideal for applications requiring high-pressure water flow or frequent use. For a more general-purpose solution, we offer ball valve taps, known for their simple design and reliable shutoff capabilities. These taps allow you to easily control water flow and prevent leaks when closed. Our equilibrium arm valves feature a float mechanism that automatically opens and closes the valve based on the water level within your tank, making it perfect where maintaining a specific water level is crucial. Float valves provide an extra layer of protection for your water tank system and, similar to equilibrium arm valves, they use a float mechanism to control water flow. However, float valves typically activate the shut-off function directly at the water source, such as a connected hose pipe preventing accidental overflows and potential water waste. Our tap and hosetail kits offer a complete and user-friendly solution for water control, including a tap with a built-in hosetail connector so you can easily attach a hose for watering gardens, filling containers, or other applications.

What's the difference between an equilibrium arm valve and a standard float valve?
A standard float valve senses tank level directly and shuts off right at the point where water enters, which can cause “water hammer” or slamming under mains pressure. An equilibrium arm valve uses a piston mechanism balanced by the float, giving a much smoother, quieter shut-off — this makes it the better choice for larger tanks or higher-pressure supplies.
Do I need a WRAS-approved valve for my tank?
If the tank stores potable (drinking) water, yes — any valve or float in contact with that supply should be WRAS approved to comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations. For non-potable applications such as rainwater harvesting or irrigation storage, WRAS approval isn't a legal requirement, though our valves are still built to the same quality standard.
What size valve or tap do I need for my tank?
Valve size should match the inlet or outlet connection on your tank, most commonly ½", ¾" or 1" BSP thread. Higher-demand applications, such as frequently refilled tanks or those on higher-pressure mains, generally need a larger bore valve to avoid restricting flow and slowing refill times. Check your tank's fitted connections before ordering, as retrofitting a different size can mean additional adaptors.
Are brass valves better than plastic ones?
Brass valves, such as our Aylesbury/Keraflo range, offer superior durability and are better suited to high-pressure or frequent-use situations, including mains-fed applications. Plastic ball valves are perfectly adequate for general-purpose, lower-pressure use and tend to be more cost-effective. If the valve will see constant cycling or higher water pressure, brass construction will last considerably longer.
Can I fit a taps or valve myself, or do I need a plumber?
Most ball valves and float valves are straightforward to fit using standard BSP threaded connections and basic tools, making them suitable for a competent DIY installer. However, if the valve is connecting to your mains water supply, it's worth checking that the installation complies with Water Regulations, and a plumber is recommended for anything involving potable water or pressurised systems.
Will a float valve stop my tank overflowing?
A correctly sized and fitted float valve will shut off the incoming supply once the tank reaches its set level, preventing overflow under normal conditions. However, it's not a substitute for an overflow pipe — we'd always recommend fitting one as a secondary safeguard in case the valve mechanism sticks or fails.
