Tank Connectors FAQs
How do I know what size connector I need for my tank?
Connectors are sized to match the tank's outlet or inlet bore, typically measured in inches (½", ¾", 1" and upwards for larger IBCs and bulk tanks). Check the existing fitting or the manufacturer's spec sheet before ordering, as a mismatch will either not thread on or won't seal properly. If you're unsure, measure the outside diameter of the threaded boss and we can advise on the correct match.
Are your tank connectors suitable for potable (drinking) water?
Some of our connectors are WRAS-approved and suitable for potable water systems, while others are intended for non-potable use such as rainwater harvesting or greywater transfer. Always check the individual product description, as using a non-WRAS fitting on a drinking water supply isn't compliant with UK water regulations. If in doubt, ask our team and we'll point you to the correct WRAS-approved option.
What material connector should I choose — plastic, brass or stainless steel?
Plastic (usually polypropylene or nylon) connectors are lightweight, corrosion-resistant and cost-effective for most rainwater and general storage applications. Brass and stainless steel connectors offer greater durability and are better suited to higher-pressure systems or where UV exposure and long-term outdoor use are a concern. For septic or waste-water contact, check compatibility, as some metals corrode faster in that environment.
Do I need any tools to fit a tank connector, or is it a simple push-fit?
Most threaded connectors just need a spanner or wrench to tighten onto the tank boss, plus PTFE tape or a suitable sealant washer to ensure a leak-free joint. Push-fit and hose-tail connectors used with our joining kits generally require no tools at all, just a jubilee clip to secure the hose. Always fit with the tank empty or the water supply isolated to avoid a mess.
Can I use a joining kit to connect a water butt to a larger storage tank?
Yes, our joining kits are designed for exactly this kind of application, combining a hose with connectors at each end to transfer water between butts, tanks or other storage containers. They're commonly used for linking multiple water butts together or filling a larger tank from a butt overflow. Just check the hose-tail size matches the outlets on both containers before ordering.
What should I do if my connector is leaking after installation?
Most leaks come down to an under-tightened fitting, missing washer, or insufficient PTFE tape on a threaded joint. Check the seal is seated correctly and the connector isn't cross-threaded, as forcing a mismatched thread will damage the tank boss. If the tank outlet itself is worn or cracked, a replacement bulkhead fitting rather than just the connector may be needed.
