What are solar systems typically used for with water and sewage tanks?
Solar systems are most commonly used to power submersible or surface pumps for rainwater harvesting, borehole extraction, livestock watering and irrigation where mains electricity isn't available. They're also increasingly fitted to sewage treatment plants to run the aeration blower off-grid, which is useful for rural properties, holiday lets or plots without a nearby power supply.
Can a solar system reliably run a sewage treatment plant's aerator?
Yes, provided the system is sized correctly with sufficient panel output and battery storage to cover the aerator's continuous daily runtime, including overnight and overcast periods. Undersizing is the most common failure point, so it's worth confirming your treatment plant's power draw against the solar kit's stated output before ordering. A backup mains or generator connection is sensible for peace of mind, even where solar is the primary source.
How do I size a solar system for my pump or plant?
Start with the running wattage and daily duty cycle of the pump or equipment you're powering, then work back to the panel wattage and battery capacity (in Ah) needed to cover that load through the UK's shorter winter daylight hours. As a rule of thumb, size the battery bank for at least two to three days' autonomy in case of poor weather, and oversize the panel array rather than the battery where space allows.
Do solar systems still work through a British winter?
They do, but output drops significantly between November and February when daylight hours are shorter and skies are more often overcast. This is why correct sizing matters — a system that copes easily in summer can struggle in winter unless the panel array and battery bank have been specified with that seasonal shortfall in mind. Mounting panels at a steeper angle and keeping them clear of shading also helps maximise winter yield.
Is planning permission or an electrician needed to install a solar pump system?
Small standalone solar kits for pumps or aerators are low-voltage DC systems and generally don't require planning permission or a qualified electrician, though we'd always recommend checking local requirements if panels are being fixed to a listed building or in a conservation area. Any connection into a property's mains electrics, or a hybrid grid-tie setup, should be wired by a competent, qualified electrician in line with current wiring regulations.
What maintenance do solar water and sewage system components need?
Panels should be kept clear of leaves, moss and heavy dirt to maintain output, and it's worth checking cable connections and mounting brackets annually for weather damage. Batteries, particularly lead-acid types, need periodic charge checks, while the pump or aerator itself should be serviced according to the manufacturer's schedule regardless of its power source. Keeping a simple maintenance log helps spot performance drop-off before it causes a failure.
