Smaller Bunds Drumpallet FAQs
What size bund do I actually need for my drum or IBC?
As a rule of thumb, secondary containment must hold at least 110% of the largest single container stored, or 25% of total stored volume if you're keeping several drums together — whichever is greater. So a single 205 litre drum needs a bund with at least 226 litres of containment capacity. If you're storing multiple drums, add up the total volume and check against both rules before choosing.
What's the difference between a drum bund and a pallet bund?
A drum bund is sized to hold one or two standard 205 litre drums upright, typically with a moulded base to keep them stable. A pallet bund is larger and designed to sit a full pallet of drums or smaller containers on a bunded deck, often with a removable grid for easy access. Which you need depends on how many containers you're storing and whether you need to move them with a pallet truck.
Are these bunds suitable for oils and chemicals, or just water?
Most of our smaller bunds are polyethylene and suitable for a wide range of oils, fuels and chemicals as well as water, but chemical compatibility varies by product. Always check the specific bund's specification against the substance you're storing, particularly for aggressive acids or solvents. If you're storing controlled substances under environmental permitting, your bund also needs to meet the relevant Environment Agency containment requirements.
Do I need a bund even if I'm only storing one drum?
Yes — under the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations and general environmental duty of care, any oil or chemical storage above ground should have secondary containment, regardless of quantity. A single small bund is a cheap way to avoid a costly spill, fine or contaminated land issue. It's particularly important if the drum is stored near drains, watercourses or on unsealed ground.
Can these smaller bunds be used outdoors, or do they need a roof?
Most of our polyethylene bunds are UV-stabilised and fine for permanent outdoor use, but rainwater will add to the containment volume over time if left uncovered, reducing spare capacity for a spill. For long-term outdoor storage we'd recommend a lockable lid or simple canopy, especially if you're storing oils or chemicals that shouldn't mix with rainwater. Check the specific product listing for UV rating and lid options.
What delivery should I expect for a small bund like this?
Smaller bunds are generally palletised and delivered on a kerbside pallet delivery, so you'll need someone available to help unload if a tail-lift isn't available. Lead times are usually quicker than for larger tanks since these are commonly stocked items. If you need it off-loaded to a specific location on site, let us know at the time of ordering as standard delivery is kerbside only.
