Ridge Product Services FAQs

What are Ridge water tanks typically used for?

Ridge tanks are GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) cold water storage tanks most commonly fitted in lofts to feed gravity-fed hot water cylinders, header tanks for heating systems, or general domestic cold water storage. They're also used commercially for break tanks and booster set supply. Ridge is a well-established UK brand, so replacement lids, fittings and insulation jackets are easy to source.

How do I know what size Ridge tank I need?

Domestic cold water storage is usually sized on occupancy — as a rule of thumb, allow around 230 litres for the first few bedrooms plus extra capacity for larger households or homes with power showers. Header tanks for sealed or open-vented heating systems are much smaller, typically 15–50 litres. If you're replacing an existing tank, matching the current capacity and footprint is usually the simplest route.

Will a Ridge tank fit through my loft hatch?

Most sectional or two-part Ridge tanks are designed to break down into panels or halves specifically so they can pass through a standard loft hatch and be assembled in situ. Check the flat-pack or knock-down dimensions against your hatch opening before ordering, not just the assembled tank size. One-piece tanks are only suitable where there's a larger opening, such as a hoist point or removable roof panel.

Are Ridge tanks suitable for storing drinking water?

Yes — Ridge cold water storage tanks used for domestic mains-fed supply are manufactured to WRAS standards for potable water, and come with a close-fitting lid to keep out contaminants and insects. Always fit them with an insulation jacket and lid seal to prevent freezing and algae growth, and support the tank on a proper level platform rather than loose loft boards.

Do I need to insulate and support the tank once it's installed?

Yes. Loft-mounted tanks should sit on a rigid, level platform spanning at least three joists to spread the weight safely — a full tank of water is considerably heavier than it looks. An insulation jacket around the sides and a well-fitted lid are essential to stop freezing in winter and to keep light out, which prevents bacterial and algae growth in the stored water.

Can I get replacement fittings for an older Ridge tank rather than replacing the whole thing?

In many cases, yes — lids, overflow kits, ball valves, insulation jackets and outlet fittings are commonly available separately, since Ridge tanks have been a standard fit in UK lofts for decades. It's worth checking the tank's condition first though: GRP tanks can become brittle or develop hairline cracks with age, so if the shell itself is compromised, replacement is usually more cost-effective than repair.
