A personnel washdown unit provides a self-contained point for hand, boot or full-body washing, typically used for farm and site biosecurity, food processing hygiene stations, or general welfare washdown on construction and agricultural sites. Most incorporate a water reservoir, pump or gravity feed, and a spray or tap outlet, sometimes with a boot scrubber or dip tray built in. They're commonly specified where mains water isn't available or where a controlled, traceable washing point is required for disease control.

Not necessarily — many units are fully self-contained with their own integral tank and either a hand pump, foot pump or battery-powered 12V pump, making them suitable for remote sites with no services. If you want heated water or a pressurised mains-fed system, you'll need a nearby power and water connection, so it's worth confirming this before ordering. Standalone units are generally the better choice for temporary sites or where infrastructure is limited.

This depends on footfall — a small 20-40 litre unit is usually enough for occasional handwashing on a small site, while busier locations with regular boot washing or multiple daily users should look at 100 litres upwards to avoid constant refilling. For biosecurity applications where every visitor must wash down, it's sensible to size generously and factor in refill logistics, especially in remote locations. Both materials are used — polyethylene units are lighter, cost-effective and resistant to most disinfectants and chemicals used in biosecurity washdowns, making them a popular choice for farms. GRP (fibreglass) versions offer greater rigidity and are often used where the unit needs to withstand rougher handling or repeated relocation around a site. Either material copes well with typical washdown chemicals, but always check compatibility if you're using strong disinfectants or acids.

Freestanding, portable washdown units generally don't require planning permission or building regulations sign-off, as they're not a permanent structure. If you're plumbing a unit into mains drainage or installing it as part of a fixed welfare facility, however, you may need to comply with local drainage regulations, particularly if washdown water containing chemicals or contaminants is being discharged. It's worth checking with your local authority or environmental health team if in doubt.

Standard stocked units are usually available for quick despatch, often within a few working days, while larger or bespoke configurations — such as integrated boot scrubbers or heated systems — can take longer depending on manufacture. Delivery is typically by kerbside pallet, so make sure there's suitable access and manpower to move the unit into position on site.
