Pensteel FAQs

What exactly is a Pensteel tank and how does it differ from a GRP or polyethylene tank?

Pensteel tanks are modular, bolted steel panel tanks — built up on site from glass-fused-to-steel or coated steel panels rather than moulded as one piece. This makes them the practical choice for larger capacities (tens to thousands of cubic metres) where a single-piece GRP or polyethylene tank simply isn't feasible to manufacture or transport. They're also fully serviceable, as individual panels can be replaced rather than the whole tank scrapped.

What sizes and capacities are available in the Pensteel range?

Because Pensteel tanks are built from standard panel sections, capacity is largely a function of how many rings and panels are used, giving a huge range from a few cubic metres up to several thousand. Height, diameter and roof configuration can all be tailored to suit a specific footprint or storage volume. Get in touch with your site constraints and required capacity and we'll advise on the best panel configuration.

Are Pensteel tanks suitable for storing potable (drinking) water?

Yes — glass-fused-to-steel Pensteel tanks with a WRAS-approved lining are widely used for potable water storage, including for water utilities and large commercial sites. The fused glass coating resists corrosion and won't taint stored water, provided the correct liner and fittings are specified. For non-potable use such as fire suppression, attenuation or agricultural storage, a simpler coating specification is normally sufficient.

What foundation or base does a Pensteel tank need?

Pensteel tanks require a level, engineered concrete ring beam or slab foundation designed to take the full weight of the tank when filled — this is not a job for compacted hardcore alone. Foundation design depends on ground conditions, tank diameter and capacity, so a groundworks or structural engineer should size it before installation. Get the foundation spec confirmed at quotation stage so the base is ready when the tank arrives.

How are Pensteel tanks installed on site?

Panels are delivered flat-packed and bolted together on site using an internal or external erection method, building the tank up ring by ring on the prepared foundation. This is specialist work carried out by trained installation teams rather than a general contractor, as bolt torque, sealant application and panel alignment all affect the finished tank's integrity. Installation timescales depend on tank size but are typically measured in days rather than weeks once the base is ready.

What maintenance do Pensteel tanks need once installed?

Routine maintenance is minimal — periodic visual inspection of panel joints, seals and any coating damage, plus the usual water quality checks if the tank is used for potable storage. Because the tank is panelled rather than one-piece, any damaged section can be unbolted and replaced without draining or scrapping the whole structure. We'd recommend an annual inspection as a minimum, more frequently for tanks in exposed or heavy-use environments.
