What exactly is a Kiwikit tank and how does it differ from a rigid GRP or polyethylene tank?
Kiwikit tanks are flexible, collapsible water storage bladders made from reinforced, UV-stabilised fabric rather than rigid plastic or fibreglass. They fold flat for transport and storage, then simply unfold and fill on site — no crane or specialist plant needed to position them. This makes them ideal for temporary water storage, firefighting reserves, or sites with restricted access.
What ground preparation do I need before setting up a Kiwikit tank?
The tank needs a level, debris-free base — grass, compacted soil, sand or concrete all work, provided there are no sharp stones, roots or protrusions that could puncture the fabric. Larger capacities benefit from a shallow bunded area or retaining wall to hold shape once filled. We'd always recommend a groundsheet or liner underlay for extra protection on stony or uneven ground.
Are Kiwikit tanks suitable for storing drinking water?
Some Kiwikit models are manufactured with WRAS-approved liners suitable for potable water, but not all are — so check the specific product spec before use. Where a tank isn't potable-rated, it's intended for non-drinking applications such as firefighting reserves, irrigation, dust suppression or construction water supply.
What sizes are available and how do I choose the right capacity?
Kiwikit tanks range from small portable units of a few hundred litres up to large-capacity bladders holding tens of thousands of litres for firefighting or agricultural reserves. Sizing depends on intended use — a fire authority reserve typically needs to meet a minimum flow duration, while irrigation or livestock use is more about matching daily consumption. Can Kiwikit tanks be used for emergency or standby firefighting water supply?
Yes, this is one of their most common uses — fire services and site managers use Kiwikit bladders as static water supplies where mains hydrants aren't available or reliable, such as rural sites, construction projects or events. They're quick to deploy, can be refilled by tanker or bowser, and take up minimal storage space when empty.
How do I clean, maintain and store a Kiwikit tank when not in use?
Drain the tank fully, rinse the interior with clean water, and allow it to air dry completely before folding to prevent mould or algae growth. Fold along the manufacturer's creases and store somewhere dry, out of direct sunlight, away from rodents and sharp objects. Inspect seams and fittings for wear before each redeployment, particularly if the tank has been left filled outdoors for an extended period.
