What are KGN Pillinger tanks made from?
KGN Pillinger tanks are manufactured from GRP (glass-reinforced plastic), a tough, corrosion-resistant material well suited to long-term water storage. GRP won't rust or degrade like steel, holds its shape under load, and is available in one-piece or sectional builds depending on the size and site access you need.
What's the difference between one-piece and sectional GRP tanks?
One-piece tanks are moulded as a single unit and are ideal where crane or plant access allows a full-size delivery straight to the installation point. Sectional tanks are built from individual panels bolted together on site, making them the practical choice for plant rooms, roof spaces or restricted-access sites where a one-piece tank simply won't fit through the door.
Are KGN Pillinger tanks suitable for drinking water storage?
Yes, KGN Pillinger's potable water tanks are built to WRAS standards and are widely used for wholesome water storage in commercial, industrial and domestic settings. Always check the specific model and fittings are rated potable before use, as the range also includes non-potable tanks for grey water, fire suppression and process applications.
Do I need planning permission or building regs sign-off to install one?
Most cold water storage tanks fall outside planning permission, but larger installations or those in listed buildings or conservation areas should be checked with your local authority. Building regulations will apply where the tank forms part of the water supply or fire system for a building, so it's worth confirming requirements with your building control body before installation, particularly for sectional tanks in plant rooms or roof voids.
How do I work out what size tank I need?
Sizing depends on end use — domestic cold water storage, fire suppression reserve, or commercial process water each have different calculation methods. As a rule of thumb, fire suppression tanks are sized to a required minimum reserve set by your fire engineer or insurer, while domestic storage is typically based on occupancy and daily demand. What access and preparation do I need before delivery?
For one-piece tanks you'll need clear access for a crane or HIAB delivery and a level, prepared base capable of taking the full water weight once filled. Sectional tanks are more forgiving as panels are carried in individually, but you'll still need a suitable base and enough room inside the plant room or chamber to assemble and bolt the sections together. Check door widths, corridor turns and headroom in advance so the delivery goes smoothly.
