Industrial Plastic Tanks FAQs

What's the difference between MDPE and HDPE tanks?

MDPE (medium-density polyethylene) is slightly more flexible and commonly used for smaller tanks and fittings, while HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is stiffer and better suited to larger volumes and industrial duty. Both are chemical-resistant and UV-stabilised for outdoor use, so the choice usually comes down to tank size, wall thickness and specific application rather than one being universally "better".

How do I work out what size tank I need?

Start with your daily usage volume and multiply by how many days of storage or buffer you need — for example, a school or factory might want 2-3 days' backup supply. Also check available footprint and headroom, as tanks range from 640 litres up to 25,000 litres in various footprints and profiles. If you're unsure, get in touch with your usage figures and site dimensions and we can help narrow it down.

Can these tanks be installed above ground, or do they need to be buried?

Most tanks in this range are designed for above-ground installation on a flat, level, load-bearing base such as concrete or compacted stone. They're not generally suitable for underground installation unless specifically designed and rated for below-ground loading, as buried tanks need much greater structural strength to resist ground and water pressure. Always check the specific product listing before planning a buried installation.

Are these tanks suitable for storing drinking water?

Some are, but not all — it depends on the specific tank and whether it's manufactured and certified to WRAS standards for potable water contact. Non-potable tanks are perfectly suited to process water, rainwater harvesting, washdown or irrigation but shouldn't be used for anything intended for human consumption. Check the individual product spec for WRAS approval before ordering if drinking water storage is your intended use.

What outlet and lid options are available?

Outlet size and position varies by tank — common options include bottom, side or sump outlets in a range of BSP thread sizes, chosen to suit your pipework and flow rate requirements. Lids are typically screw-fit or bolt-down for easy access during cleaning, inspection or fitting of level sensors and float valves. If you need a non-standard outlet position or size, ask us before ordering as retrofitting can be more difficult once installed.

What should I expect regarding delivery of larger tanks?

Larger industrial tanks are usually delivered on a kerbside or palletised service and, due to their size, often require offloading assistance on site — a forklift, tail-lift or several people, depending on the tank. Access for a large delivery vehicle should be considered in advance, especially down narrow lanes or onto soft ground. Lead times vary by size and manufacturer, so check the estimated dispatch time on the product page before planning installation dates.
