Calpeda FAQs

What types of Calpeda pump do I need for a domestic water system?

For boosting mains or tank-fed supply, a Calpeda multistage pump (such as the MXH or NGX range) is usually the right choice, giving steady pressure with low noise. If you're pumping surface water or emptying a sump, a submersible unit from the GXV or GXRM range is more suitable. Tell us the application — potable boosting, drainage, or sewage — and we can point you to the correct series.

Are Calpeda pumps suitable for use with sewage treatment plants and pump stations?

Yes, Calpeda's GXV and GXRM submersible ranges are widely used for pumping settled effluent from treatment plants, holding tanks and pump stations. Vortex impeller models handle solids without clogging, which is essential where sewage or grey water contains debris. Always check the free passage size against your application before ordering.

How do I size a Calpeda pump correctly?

Sizing comes down to flow rate (litres per minute or per hour) and total head — the vertical lift plus friction losses through pipework and fittings. Calpeda publish performance curves for each model showing flow against head, so once you know your required duty point we can help match it to the right pump. Undersizing leads to poor performance; oversizing wastes energy and can cause excessive wear.

Can Calpeda pumps be used with potable water storage tanks?

Selected Calpeda models are suitable for potable water transfer and boosting, but the pump itself doesn't need WRAS approval in the same way a tank fitting does — it's the wetted materials and installation that matter. Where water quality is critical, stick to stainless steel wetted-part models and ensure correct backflow protection is fitted upstream. If in doubt, ask us to confirm suitability for your specific setup.

Do Calpeda pumps need special electrical installation?

Most domestic Calpeda pumps run on a standard single-phase 230V supply, though larger submersible and multistage models may require three-phase power. All pumps should be installed with appropriate isolation, RCD protection and, for submersible units, a suitably rated cable gland or junction box kept above flood level. We'd always recommend a qualified electrician carries out the final connection.

What maintenance do Calpeda pumps typically need?

Calpeda pumps are generally low-maintenance, but submersible units benefit from an annual check of the seal, cable condition and impeller for wear or debris build-up. Multistage and surface pumps should have strainers or filters cleaned periodically to protect the impeller stack. Keeping spare mechanical seals or gaskets on hand reduces downtime if a pump needs servicing.
