The package pairs a pressure vessel and booster pump set with the controls, non-return valves and pressure switches needed to boost mains or stored water supply. It's designed as a complete, ready-to-plumb-in unit rather than a collection of separate parts you have to specify yourself. You'll still need to confirm inlet and outlet pipework sizes match your existing system before ordering.

Sizing comes down to two figures: peak flow rate (litres per minute) needed across all outlets running simultaneously, and the head (height/distance) the pump has to push water against. Undersizing gives poor pressure at the top of a building; oversizing wastes energy and can shorten pump life through excessive cycling. Yes — booster packages are commonly fitted downstream of a rainwater harvesting tank to deliver mains-equivalent pressure to WCs, outdoor taps or irrigation. In these non-potable applications the pump and pipework must be clearly labelled and kept physically separate from any potable supply to avoid cross-contamination risk. Where the system also feeds any potable outlets, a WRAS-approved backflow arrangement is essential.

A standalone booster package for domestic pressure boosting generally doesn't need Building Regs sign-off, but if it's part of a wider plumbing or drainage alteration this may fall under Part G or your local water authority's byelaws. Any connection affecting the incoming mains supply should also comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations. If in doubt, check with your installer or local water company before work starts.

Most installers mount the unit on a level, solid base near the incoming supply, connect inlet and outlet pipework, wire in the control panel, and commission the pump to check pressure and cut-in/cut-out settings. Isolation valves either side make future servicing straightforward without draining the whole system. Allow space for access panels and ventilation, as booster pumps do generate some noise and heat in operation.

Check the pressure vessel's pre-charge annually, as a drop here causes the pump to short-cycle and wear out faster. Inspect seals, non-return valves and strainers for debris or scale, particularly in hard water areas, and listen for unusual noise which can indicate bearing wear. A well-maintained booster set typically runs for many years between major services.
