Do I need a washdown separator if I already have a standard oil separator?

Vehicle washdown produces a different pollutant load than surface water run-off — expect detergents, road grime, brake dust and suspended solids alongside oils. A standard forecourt or roof-drainage oil separator isn't designed for this combination and will clog or bypass quickly. A dedicated washdown separator, often with a silt trap ahead of the oil/water stage, handles the mixed contaminant load properly.

How do I size a washdown separator for my site?

Sizing is based on the peak flow rate from your washdown activity (litres per second), not just the number of vehicles per day — this depends on hose or jet-wash pressure, number of simultaneous bays, and whether water is recycled. Full retention separators are sized to treat all run-off up to a design storm; bypass separators only treat a proportion. Your local water company or environmental officer can confirm the class and size required for your discharge consent.

Do these separators need Environment Agency or water company approval?

In most cases, yes — discharging washdown water to a public sewer requires a trade effluent consent from your local water company, and separators are usually specified as part of that agreement. If you're discharging to a watercourse or via soakaway rather than sewer, you'll likely need Environment Agency permission instead. We'd always recommend confirming your specific consent conditions before ordering, as they can dictate separator class and capacity.

What's the difference between class 1 and class 2 separators for this application?

Class 1 separators are designed to achieve a lower residual oil content in the treated discharge (typically under 5mg/litre) and are generally required where run-off could reach a watercourse or sensitive drainage. Class 2 separators achieve a higher permitted residual (around 100mg/litre) and are more commonly accepted for discharge to foul sewer under a trade effluent consent. Can a washdown separator be installed above ground, or does it need to be buried?

Most washdown separators are installed below ground so vehicles and surface drainage can gravity-feed into the chamber, with access covers left flush at ground level for tankering out and inspection. Above-ground or part-buried installations are possible on some sites with limited excavation options, but this affects inlet/outlet levels and may need an additional pump station. How often does a vehicle washdown separator need emptying and servicing?

This depends on washdown volume and contaminant load, but as a guide most sites need the silt trap emptied every 3–6 months and the separator itself desludged and oil-skimmed at similar or slightly longer intervals. Regular servicing isn't optional — most trade effluent consents require documented maintenance records, and a neglected separator will lose efficiency and risk a consent breach.
