Traffic Work Site Management FAQs

What height of barrier do I need for a highway or roadworks site?

For most highway and roadworks applications, a 1m barrier is the standard height and meets typical Chapter 8 requirements for pedestrian and traffic segregation. 2m barriers are generally used where higher visibility screening is needed, such as shielding site activity from public view or providing extra fall-restraint on elevated works. Always check the specific requirements of your traffic management plan or local authority permit before ordering.

What's the difference between mesh, road/track, and self-weighted barriers?

Mesh barriers are lightweight, portable, and ideal for pedestrian control on construction sites or events. Road and track barriers are heavier-duty, designed to withstand vehicle contact and are commonly used on highways and haul roads. Self-weighted barriers have an integrated water or ballast-fillable base, giving stability without the need for separate feet or pins, making them useful on hard standing where ground fixing isn't possible.

Are your traffic cones compliant with UK standards?

Our plastic traffic cones are manufactured to relevant British Standards for road and worksite use, with reflective sleeving available for improved visibility in low light. Standard sizes include 500mm for short-duration or car park use, and 750mm-1000mm for higher-speed roads where greater conspicuity is required. Check your specific traffic management plan, as some local authorities and Highways England specify minimum cone heights for particular road types.

Do I need permission to install speed ramps in a car park or private road?

On private land such as a car park or workplace access road, you generally don't need local authority permission to install speed ramps, though it's sensible to check any site-specific covenants or landlord agreements first. On public highways, speed ramps fall under local authority control and require formal approval and installation by an approved contractor. Our ramps for private use are straightforward to install with ground fixings and don't require specialist plant.

What traffic signage do I need for a temporary construction site?

This depends on your traffic management plan, but common requirements include warning signs for site entrances and exits, pedestrian diversion signage, speed limit signs, and information signs for deliveries or visitors. If work affects a public highway, signage must comply with the relevant Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions and typically needs sign-off from the local authority or a qualified traffic management contractor. For internal sites or private land, requirements are more flexible but should still follow good practice for visibility and clarity.

How quickly can I get barriers and signage delivered for an urgent job?

Most of our traffic management stock, including barriers, cones and signage, is held in the UK and available for prompt despatch, with next-day delivery achievable on many lines when ordered before the daily cut-off. Larger orders or bulk barrier hire-equivalent purchases may take slightly longer depending on stock levels and courier capacity, so it's worth checking availability before committing to a start date. If you have a hard deadline, contact us directly and we'll confirm the fastest realistic delivery window.
