Tanks Direct Water Tanks FAQs
What size water tank do I need?
This depends on intended use: a household backup supply might only need 1,000–2,500 litres, while livestock, irrigation or fire-fighting reserves often call for 5,000 litres upwards. Consider daily usage, delivery frequency (if refilled by tanker) and available space, including height restrictions for above-ground installation. Our team can help you calculate capacity based on your specific application.
Are these tanks made from GRP or polyethylene, and does it matter?
Our above-ground range includes both GRP (fibreglass) and polyethylene tanks, each with different strengths. GRP tanks tend to be more rigid and better suited to larger capacities and bespoke shapes, whereas polyethylene is lightweight, UV-stable and cost-effective for standard sizes. Both materials are manufactured to be food-safe where required and finished to a high standard here in Somerset.
Do I need a base or foundation for an above-ground tank?
Yes — every above-ground tank needs a firm, level, and well-drained base to prevent stress on the tank walls and fittings once filled. A compacted hardcore or concrete pad is standard, sized to at least the full footprint of the tank base. We can advise on base specifications for your chosen model to ensure it's properly supported and remains stable when full.
Can these tanks be left outside all year round?
Our above-ground tanks are designed for permanent outdoor installation and are UV-stabilised to resist degradation from sunlight. That said, in exposed or particularly cold locations, pipework and any exposed valves should be lagged or protected to prevent freezing in winter. The tank body itself is robust enough to handle typical UK weather without additional cladding.
What should I check regarding access and delivery for a large tank?
Larger tanks are bulky and typically delivered on a flatbed or crane-offload vehicle, so you'll need clear, level access from the road to the installation point, with enough width for the vehicle and a safe unloading area. Overhead obstructions such as power lines or low branches should also be checked in advance. We'll confirm delivery requirements with you once you've chosen a model so there are no surprises on the day.
Can tanks be fitted with extra outlets, sight gauges or bespoke fittings?
Yes, many of our above-ground tanks can be adapted with additional outlets, inlets, overflow points, sight gauges or ladders depending on the model and your intended use. As these tanks are shaped by customer feedback and made in-house, bespoke modifications are often possible even after the standard design stage. Get in touch with your requirements and we'll advise what can be built into your tank before manufacture.
