Spel FAQs

What is a Spel sectional tank and how does it differ from a one-piece GRP tank?

Spel tanks are modular GRP panel tanks bolted together on site from individual sectional panels, rather than delivered as a single moulded shell. This makes them ideal for large-capacity storage — often tens of thousands of litres — where a one-piece tank would be too big to transport or crane into a plant room or restricted site.

What capacities are available in the Spel range?

Spel sectional tanks are built from standardised panel sizes that bolt together, so capacities scale from a few thousand litres up to several hundred thousand litres depending on how many panels are used in each dimension. This modular approach means we can match the tank footprint and height to your available space rather than forcing a fixed volume.

Are Spel tanks suitable for storing drinking water?

Yes, Spel tanks are available in WRAS-approved potable specification for wholesome water storage, as well as non-potable builds for fire suppression, grey water or industrial process water. Always confirm which specification you need before ordering, as the internal coatings and fittings differ between potable and non-potable versions.

What site preparation is needed before installing a Spel sectional tank?

Spel tanks require a level, load-bearing base or plinth designed to take the full weight of the tank when filled with water — this is significant, so groundworks and structural calculations should be done by a competent engineer beforehand. You'll also need enough clear access around the base for panel assembly, and overhead access if the tank is being built inside a plant room or roof space.

Can a Spel tank be installed inside a building or does it need to be external?

One of the main advantages of the sectional design is that panels can be carried through doorways and up staircases or lifts, then bolted together in situ — making Spel tanks a practical choice for plant rooms, basements and roof-level installations where a pre-formed tank simply wouldn't fit. External installations are equally common, typically on a concrete plinth with insulated cladding if freezing is a risk.

What access and maintenance features do Spel tanks include?

Spel tanks are specified with lockable access hatches, internal ladders for larger tanks, and inlet/outlet, overflow and washout connections positioned to suit your pipework layout. Because the tank is built from bolted panels, individual sections can be removed for inspection, cleaning or repair without needing to replace the whole tank.
