Halsted tanks are GRP sectional (panel) water storage tanks, built up from bolted glass-reinforced plastic panels rather than supplied as a single moulded vessel. They're most commonly used for large-volume cold water storage, fire suppression reserves and process water on commercial, industrial and agricultural sites where a one-piece tank would be too large to transport or crane into position.

Rather than being lifted whole onto a base, Halsted tanks are assembled panel-by-panel on site, usually on a supporting steel grillage or concrete plinth designed to take the full water load. This makes them practical for plant rooms, roof-top installations and restricted-access sites where a single-piece tank simply won't fit through doors or gaps. Installation should be carried out by a competent contractor following the manufacturer's assembly and torque specifications.

Yes, Halsted sectional tanks are available in WRAS-approved specification for potable water storage, with internal linings and seals suitable for wholesome water. If the tank is for drinking water, confirm you're ordering the potable-rated build rather than the standard non-potable version, as insulation, venting and access hatch details differ.

Sectional tanks are built from standard panel modules, so capacity is scaled by adding rows and courses of panels rather than choosing from a fixed size list, giving far greater flexibility than a moulded tank. For cold water storage, capacity is normally sized against daily demand plus a contingency reserve; for fire suppression, capacity is dictated by the relevant fire authority or sprinkler design requirement. Panel joints and seals should be visually inspected periodically for weeping or degradation, particularly in the first year after installation as bolted joints can need re-torquing. Potable water tanks should be inspected and cleaned in line with L8/ACOP guidance to manage legionella risk, and access hatches should be checked to confirm they remain vermin- and insect-proof.

Because they're modular, Halsted tanks are delivered as flat-packed panels, fixings and ancillaries rather than a single large unit, which keeps transport straightforward even for big capacities. Before delivery, confirm your base or grillage is complete, level and rated for the full water weight, and that there's safe access for offloading and on-site assembly. Check panel counts against the delivery note on arrival, as shortages are far easier to resolve before assembly begins.
