As a general guide, allow around 40-50 litres of trough capacity per horse to cover daily drinking needs, though this increases in hot weather or for larger breeds. For shared paddocks, it's better to fit one larger trough than several small ones, as this reduces refilling and keeps water fresher. If you're grazing multiple horses, also think about trough positioning so dominant animals don't block access for others.

Most GRP and polyethylene troughs cope well with cold weather, but standing water will still ice over in a hard frost. Look for troughs with insulated construction or fit a proprietary trough heater/float valve cover if your paddock is exposed. Positioning the trough away from prevailing wind and checking it daily through winter is still essential, whatever the material.

A footbath allows you to treat conditions like thrush or mud fever consistently, without wasting solution or making a mess in the yard. Horses can stand with hooves submerged for the recommended time, ensuring the treatment actually reaches the affected area rather than being hosed straight off. They're particularly useful in winter when horses are stood in wet or muddy conditions for longer periods.

Choose a feed bin with a tight-fitting, rodent-proof lid and keep it somewhere dry and well-ventilated, ideally off a solid floor rather than directly on soil. Polyethylene bins are a good choice as they don't absorb moisture or odours the way wood or cardboard can. Always let feed cool fully before sealing it in, as trapped warmth and humidity are what cause mould to develop.

If storing outdoors, make sure the unit has good drainage underneath and a secure, lockable lid to protect against both damp and theft. Leather tack in particular benefits from a dry, ventilated environment to prevent it drying out or growing mould.

Look for robust, UV-stable materials such as GRP or heavy-duty polyethylene, as these resist cracking and fading from constant outdoor exposure. Check that any fittings, ballcocks or hinges are easy to access for cleaning and repair, since yard equipment needs regular maintenance to stay hygienic. It's also worth considering ease of emptying and moving, particularly if you'll need to rotate or muck out grazing areas throughout the year.
