Booster Pump Sets FAQs
How do I know what size booster set I need?
Sizing depends on the number of outlets you need to run simultaneously, the pipe run and the pressure/flow rate required at each fitting. As a guide, a single house typically needs a single or twin pump set, while apartment blocks or commercial premises with multiple simultaneous draw-offs need twin or triple variable-speed sets. If you're unsure, give us your property type, number of bathrooms/outlets and incoming mains pressure and we can help match you to the right set.
Do I need a break tank or can I connect a booster pump straight to the mains?
In most cases you cannot connect a booster pump directly to the mains supply — Water Regulations require a break tank (or water storage tank) to prevent backflow contamination and undue pressure loss to neighbouring properties. The booster set then draws from the break tank to deliver consistent pressure throughout the building. Direct mains boosting is only permitted in specific, approved circumstances, so always check with your water authority first.
What's the difference between single, twin and triple pump sets?
A single pump set uses one variable-speed pump and suits smaller domestic properties with modest simultaneous demand. Twin sets use two pumps working alternately or together, giving built-in redundancy and better handling of peak demand — a sensible choice for larger homes or small commercial sites. Triple sets are designed for higher-demand applications such as apartment blocks or commercial buildings, offering greater flow capacity and resilience if one pump needs servicing.
Are your booster pump sets WRAS approved?
Yes, our Cold Water Booster Sets are WRAS approved, meaning they meet the water fittings regulations for use with wholesome (potable) water supplies. This is essential for compliance when boosting mains water for domestic or commercial drinking water use. Always check the specific model's WRAS certification against your project's requirements before installation.
Can a booster set be installed where space is limited?
Yes, we stock compact booster sets specifically designed for tight plant rooms, cupboards or small commercial installations where a full-size set won't fit. These retain the same variable-speed performance in a smaller footprint, though flow rates are generally lower than larger triple sets. For unusual layouts or particularly restricted spaces, we can also help source bespoke configurations.
Do booster pump sets need regular maintenance?
Yes, like any mechanical pump system, booster sets benefit from periodic checks of pressure settings, seals, non-return valves and the control panel to keep performance consistent. Grundfos-powered sets and similar branded units typically have long service intervals, but an annual check by a competent installer is recommended, particularly for commercial or multi-occupancy installations. Keeping the break tank clean and well-maintained also protects the pump set from debris and reduces wear.
