What is COSHH? What are the key requirements?

COSHH stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. It's a set of regulations in the UK designed to protect workers from health risks associated with hazardous substances. These regulations require employers to control substances that can cause harm, such as chemicals, dust, fumes, and biological agents.

The goal of the COSHH regulations is to ensure that the necessary steps are being taken prevent ill health and accidents in the workplace.

The key requirements of COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations include:

  • Risk Assessment: Employers must assess the risks associated with hazardous substances in the workplace.
  • Control Measures: Implement measures to prevent or control exposure to hazardous substances.
  • Maintenance: Ensure that control measures are maintained in good working order through regular examination and testing.
  • Information and Training: Provide employees with information, instruction, and training about the risks and the precautions they need to take.
  • Health Surveillance: Conduct health surveillance where appropriate to monitor the health of employees exposed to hazardous substances.
  • Emergency Planning: Have plans in place to deal with accidents, incidents, and emergencies involving hazardous substances.
